Cardinals begin to hit stride

The host Calvert Hall Cardinals shutout the No. 9 ranked Mount St. Joseph’s Gaels Friday night with a little help from the defense.

Cornerback Jimmy Schneider clinched a 17-0 lead in the fourth quarter with an 83 yard interception return for a touchdown, helping Calvert Hall maintain its rich winning football tradition.  Patrick Fitzgerald began the scoring for the Cardinals in the final minute of the first half  with a 13-yard touchdown run.

Sophomore running back C.J. Williams (76 yards rushing),  filled in for starting senior tailback, Tony Rossi who was out with an ankle injury. “Tony finds a way to change the game, so I knew that I had to make some plays to give us a chance.” said Williams.

Scott Merkel added a field goal in the third quarter to help further the Cardinals advantage.  Calvert Hall posted its second straight shutout, and gained its first win over an MIAA conference opponent.

After opening the season with two rough loses, Calvert Hall has one three straight games by a combined score of 131-6.  They hope to keep their streak going this Saturday, October 3, against local rival Towson High.
