Providing a pulse for the Baltimore sports scene

Baltimore has just about every sport to offer, from youth hockey leagues, to its professional indoor soccer team, the Blast, who won the league championship in 2008. These sports are just one small piece of the Baltimore sports puzzle.

The city of Baltimore hosts two major professional sports franchises, the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball, and the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League.  The Ravens are the beloved of the two, particularly because they actually pursue championships.  On the other hand the Orioles have an owner in Peter Angelos who really could care less about the teams standing, as long as he is making a profit.

Besides their two major sports franchises, Baltimore is known as one of the biggest hotbeds for the sport of lacrosse.  From a young age, the tradition of lacrosse is spread to young boys and girls, and competition can get intense as early as 11 years old.

The public and private high schools around the Baltimore, Washington D.C. corridor have provided many Division I colleges with premier talent.  For example Ryan Hoff of Dulaney High School in Baltimore County, helped to bring Notre Dame to the fore front of college lacrosse.

Essex Community College in Baltimore County is one of the most highly respected junior college programs in the country, former coach Brian Duncan took the school to four national championship games, and won it all in 2004.

Coaches across the country scout players from local Baltimore high schools, Calvert Hall provides plenty of Division I talent every year, not only for lacrosse but for football as well.

Baltimore is also home to a plethora of nationally recognized private golf clubs, as well as some of the nicest public courses in the state of Maryland.  This past Spring, Baltimore Golf and Country Club in Timonium, Maryland hosted the Senior PGA Championships, where Jay Haas beat out Tom Watson on the last day.

As you can see, Baltimore’s sports scene has quite a bit to offer to for the causal fan, or the fanatic.  So check out all the avenues, there will be one for you.
